14D13N Dive Islands, River Boats, and Orangutans of Kalimantan I Indonesia

Day 1 : PANGKALAN BUN – KUMAI – PARK (L & D)

Your guide will collect you from the Pangkalan Bun Airport for transfer to the port of Kumai to board your personal boat. It is a traditional Klotok wooden river boat about 12m by 2.5m with an upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. The boat team includes the boatman, a cook and expert guide. In the peaceful afternoon we will slowly explore the quite river by the klotok to observe the wildlife such as long noses monkey, long tail macaque, birds along the riverside. Dinner and overnight on the boat. The boat is equipped with very simple mattresses, pillows and toilet facilities. The boatmen will prepare all meals. Bottled “mineral” water and mosquito nets are available on the boat.

Day 2 : PONDOK TANGGUY – CAMP LEAKEY (B, L & D)

After breakfast cruise up the river for Pondok Tangguy, the third rehabilitation center for orangutans, see feeding time at 09.00 am. later travel to a side creek through tea colored water to see the perfect reflections from the vegetation along the river. You may even see fresh water crocodiles. Next visit is to Camp Leakey, the research center, where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest. Set off on an easy and pretty trek through the tropical rainforest to see orangutans, birds and other rainforest animals and jungle plants. Keep an eye out for noisy gibbons, deer and wild boar. Back to the boat for lunch before returning to see feeding time at 2 pm for the old rehabilitated orangutans. Overnight on the boat. Return to the boat for dinner and move to a quiet mooring for the night.

Day 3 : KUMAI – AIRPORT – RUNGAN SARI RESORT (B)

Free morning program until time transfer to Kumai then to Pangkalan Bun airport for flight to Sampit and road transfer to Rungan Sari Resort. Lunch along the road and dinner by own arrangement from the hotel.

Day 4 : PALANGKA RAYA – START CRUISE (B, L & D)

Meet at Palangka Raya airport and transfer your boat in Palangka Raya harbour to start your journey. Cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue upriver along the forest lined river, passing villages. In the early evening, take a canoe through the shimmering black water lakes. Keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and Brahmini kites. Return to the boat for a quiet dinner in the midst of the jungle.

Day 5 : BAPALLAS ISLAND – TANGKILING (B, L & D)

The boat moves up the Rungan River as you enjoy breakfast. On arrival to Bapallas Island, take a motorised canoe to observe orangutans. Leisurely lunch onboard while cruising to Kanarakan, a tiny riverside village on the Rungan River, passing Kaja Island, orangutan pre-release island for further sightings of orangutans. Arriving in the afternoon, the village elder, a Dayak Ngaju, gives a welcoming ceremony. We then stroll around the village with a local host to see the village home gardens, rubber field & rubber tapping demonstration, and other village livelihoods. Visit to the elder’s house and enjoy the traditional spices coffee while sharing stories.Back to the boat and cruise down to Lake Tahai. Overnight.

Day 6 : SEI GOHONG – MUARA RUNGAN (B, L & D)

Optional dawn canoeing to the lake for bird watching. Leisurely breakfast on board. Visit the village of Sei Gohong to meet the traditional medicine expert then a short walk to the nearby forest to find several plants that are used as traditional medications by the Ngajus. Back to the village and see a larger collection of the traditional medicines and discuss their functions with the locals. Back to the boat and cruise downstream to Muara Rungan passing Katimpun village. Overnight near Muara Rungan.

Day 7 : MUARA RUNGAN – PALANGKA RAYA – BALIKPAPAN (B, L)

Enjoy your last breakfast on the boat. Transfer off the boat to the handicraft market and have lunch at a traditional Dayak restaurant before transfer to the airport. Upon arrival at Balikpapan airport, meeting service and transfer to your hotel in Balikpapan. Dinner is at own arrangement.

Day 8 SAMARINDA, MAHAKAM (B, L & D)

You will be picked up from the hotel and transfer to Loa Janan, to board houseboat for exciting adventure on Mahakam river. Meals provided and overnight on houseboat.

Day 9 : MUARA MUNTAI, MANCONG, TANJUNG ISUY, MUARA PAHU (B, L & D)

Short sight seeing at Muara Muntai Wooden village, then crossing Jempang Lake by motor canoe to Mancong. During the cruise you could see Rain forest and wildlife at Ohong creek like monkey’s and birds, Upon arrival at Mancong, welcomed with a traditional ceremony by the Dayak Benuaq, one of the Oldest Dayak Longhouse of East Kalimantan can be found here, Late afternoon by motor canoe to Tanjung Isuy for sightseeing and continue to Houseboat for dinner and overnight. Houseboat will cruise downstream to Tenggarong.

Day 10 : TENGGARONG – BALIKPAPAN – BERAU (B, L & D)

Arrive at Tenggarong, visiting the former palace of Sultan Kutai Kertanegara. Where you will see the Sultan’s impressive collection of heirlooms, ceramics, Dayak’s art and culture items, until departure transfer to Balikpapan airport for your onward flight to Berau.Overnight Berau.

DAY 11 : BERAU – DERAWAN ARCHIPELAGO RESORT (B, L & D)

After breakfast transfer to harbor by car (approx 2,5 hours) to board speedboat to cross the Sulawesi Sea to Nanukan or Maratua Island. Check in at the Resort. Relax on the beautiful coral island and enjoy 4 dives (optional extra cost) at different places over the 2 days. Beach comb or snorkel or relax in the ambiance of this tiny coral island, all to yourself.

DAY 12 : SANGALAKI & KAKABAN ISLANDS (B, L & D)

Early in the morning, transfer by speedboat(optional extra cost) to Sangalaki Island which is called the Capital of the Mantas Rays, many kinds of exotic fish could be seen in this area like the Mantas, Napoleons, purple sea horses, tunicates, dwarf scorpion fishes, and not to forget the Coral Sea Garden which is still in tact. Continue to Kakaban Island, the island with non-sting jellyfish in the inside and beautiful coral wall garden in the outside. Return to the resort .

DAY 13 : MARATUA & GUSUNG ISLANDS (B, L & D)

Full day (optional extra cost) explore Maratua Island (Cristal cave, Gusung island and jellyfish lake).

DAY 14 : NUNAKAN ISLAND – JAKARTA (B)

Breakfast in the resort, before boarding speedboat for return to Berau airport. Tour the end.
