Day 1: Palangkaraya – Start With Cruise (L & D)
Meet at Palangka Raya airport and transfer your boat to Palangka Raya harbor to start your journey. Cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue upriver along the forest-lined river, passing villages. Take a canoe through the shimmering black water lakes in the early evening. Keep an eye out for probosci monkeys, hornbills, and Brahmini kites. Return to the boat for a quiet dinner amid the jungle.
Day 2: Bapallas Island – Kanarakan (B, L & D)
The boat moves up the Rungan River as you enjoy breakfast. On arrival at Bapallas Island, take a motorized canoe to observe orangutans. Learn about the BOSF rehabilitation programs. Leisurely lunch onboard while cruising to Kanarakan, a tiny riverside village on the Rungan River. Arriving in the afternoon, welcomed by the village elder with Dayak Ngaju welcoming ceremony, then stroll around the town with a local host to see the village home gardens, rubber field & rubber tapping demonstration, and other village livelihoods. Visit the elder’s house and enjoy the traditional spices of coffee while sharing stories. Back to the boat and cruise down to Lake Tahai. Overnight.
Day 3: Sei Gohong – Muara Ruangan (B, L & D)
Optional dawn canoeing to the lake for bird watching. Leisurely breakfast on board as the boat passes the orangutan pre-release island of Pulau Kaja. Visit the village of Sei Gohong to meet the traditional medicine expert, then take a short walk to the nearby forest to find several plants used as conventional medications by the Ngajus. Back to the village and see an enormous collection of traditional medicines and discuss their functions with the locals; back to the boat and cruise downstream to Muara Rungan, passing Katimpun village. Overnight near Muara Rungan.
Day 4: Muara Ruangan – Sampit – Pangkalanbun Kumai (B, L & D)
After breakfast, the boat cruises to Tanjung Sangalang for checkout. Leave the boat early for an air-conditioned car transfer to Sampit (approximately 3.5 hours) to pick up the flight to Pangkalan Bun. Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun airport, a guide will pick you up and transfer you to Kumai by taxi (approximately 30 minutes), passing several villages. Upon arrival in Kumai, the boat moves up the river to explore the incredible mangrove, nipah palm, and wildlife along the Sekonyer River while lunch is prepared on the ship. Late afternoon, observe the proboscis monkey and other primates along the river. The boat is a traditional wooden river boat about 14 m x 2.5 m with a roof forming the upper deck where we can view the rain forest as it glides. Overnight on the ship.
Day 5: Camp Leakey – Boat/Lodge (B, L & D)
After breakfast, board the klotok to travel upriver for about 21⁄2 hours boating and then up a side creek to Camp Leakey, where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest and also known as the research center for Orangutan. They were trekking through tropical rainforests, searching for wildlife, wild orangutans, birds, and other primates and tropical jungle plants. Back to the boat for lunch, then witness feeding time at 2 p.m. for old rehabilitation orangutan given additional foods. Overnight on the ship.
Day 6: Pondok Tangguy – Pesalat – Tanjung Harapan – Boat/Lodge (B, L & D)
After breakfast, boat down the river to Pondok Tanggui, a rehabilitation center for the ex-captive orangutans, and see feeding time around 9 a.m. Continue to Pesalat, where we can trek in the forest to observe the wildlife and see the reforestation project. We can also plant a baby tree there (donate to help the project). In the afternoon, visit the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center to witness another feeding time around 3 p.m. After that, we may call a village near the national park. Boat down the river to the Nipah palm area, where we can see the beautiful fireflies when the weather is good. Overnight on the ship.
Day 7: Tanjung Putting – Kumai – Departure To Airport (B)
The boat returns to Kumai and then transfers to the airport. Lastly, the tour ends.
